WordPress can rank very well. It can also ship with settings, plugins and archive pages that quietly hold a site back. Most WordPress SEO work is finding and removing those.
WordPress SEO is the set of configuration, performance and content decisions that let a WordPress site be crawled, understood and ranked. WordPress itself is search-friendly. The problems come from the theme, the plugins, the hosting and the settings added on top of it.
Our own site, digitalwasfa.com, runs on WordPress with Elementor and Rank Math in Arabic and English, so what follows is what we deal with on our own pages, not only on clients'.
| Area | What we do | What goes wrong if it is skipped |
|---|---|---|
| Indexing | Confirm "Discourage search engines" is off on the live site and on only for staging | A launched site stays out of Google, usually after a redesign copied staging settings |
| SEO plugin | Use one plugin only (we use Rank Math) for titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps and schema | Two plugins print duplicate meta tags and conflicting canonicals |
| Permalinks | Short, readable, stable addresses with no dates or IDs, set before launch | Changing them later needs a redirect map and loses time |
| Archives and thin pages | Noindex tag archives, attachment pages and empty author archives unless they have a purpose | Hundreds of near-empty pages dilute the site |
| Arabic and English versions | A multilingual plugin set up with separate translated pages, hreflang pairs and a self-referencing canonical per language | Google may show the wrong language or treat the versions as duplicates |
| Redirects | 301 redirects for every changed or removed address, ideally at server level or in the SEO plugin | Old links and rankings are lost, and visitors see 404 pages |
| Schema | Organisation, local business, article and breadcrumb markup, checked in the Rich Results Test | Missing or contradictory facts about the business |
| Security and updates | Updates applied, spam and malware monitored | A hacked site can fill with spam pages that damage rankings |
Google's thresholds for a good page experience are Largest Contentful Paint at 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 ms or less and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less, measured on real visits. Most WordPress slowness comes from five places.
A slow server response delays everything else. Check response time over several days, not once.
Elementor sites stay fast when containers are kept shallow and unused widgets are removed. Turn on the performance features available in your current version and test after each change.
Serve WebP at the displayed size with width and height set. Do not lazy load the main hero image.
Each plugin adds scripts and queries. Remove any whose job you cannot name.
Use a cache plugin suited to your server. Aggressive minification can break builders, so test every setting.
A full SEO audit measures these using field data where it is available.
Arabic pages need right-to-left layout, Arabic fonts that load quickly, and keyword research done in Arabic rather than translated. Arabic addresses appear in browsers as percent-encoded strings. Google reads them correctly, so you can use Arabic slugs or Latin ones. Pick one approach and use it throughout.
More on this in our Arabic SEO guide.
If you need a five-page brochure site with no plans to grow it, a hosted builder may cost you less time. If you have a large, custom application, a purpose-built stack may suit better. Our comparison Wix vs WordPress for SEO sets out the differences, and choosing a platform for a Saudi business website covers the wider decision.
Yes. It produces clean, editable pages and has strong plugin support. Results depend on the setup, the speed of the site and the quality of the content.
One of the well-maintained ones, configured properly. We use Rank Math. The plugin matters less than having only one and setting it up correctly.
Usually not. Most gains come from fixing configuration, speed and content. A rebuild is justified when the structure itself prevents the site from working well.
It can. If page addresses, headings and content stay the same and the new theme is fast, the effect is usually small. If addresses change without redirects, the loss can be large.
