SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the work of making your website easy for Google and other search engines to find, understand and trust, so that it appears when people search for what you sell. The traffic it brings is not paid for per click, which is what separates it from advertising.
This guide explains how SEO works, what its parts are, which terms you will hear from agencies, and what changes when your customers search in Arabic and English in Saudi Arabia.
How does SEO work?
Search engines do three jobs in order: they discover pages (crawling), store and organise what they find (indexing), and decide which pages to show for each search (ranking). SEO is about helping at each step.
- CrawlingPrograms called crawlers follow links and read your sitemap to discover pages. If a page is blocked or has no links pointing to it, it may never be found.
- IndexingThe search engine reads the page, works out what it is about and stores it. Duplicate, thin or contradictory pages may be left out.
- RankingWhen someone searches, the engine picks the pages it judges most helpful for that person, in that place and language, and puts them in order.
Google describes SEO as helping search engines understand your content and helping people find your site and decide whether to visit it. It also says there are no secret tricks that guarantee a top position. Anyone who offers one is selling something else.
What are the parts of SEO?
SEO is usually split into technical, on-page and off-page work. A site needs all three, and the order matters: fix technical problems first, because good content on a page Google cannot index earns nothing.
| Part | What it covers | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Whether the site can be crawled, indexed and loaded quickly | Sitemap, redirects, canonical tags, page speed, mobile layout, language setup |
| On-page SEO | What each page says and how it is organised | Titles, headings, copy that answers the search, internal links, image descriptions |
| Off-page SEO | Signals from outside your site that it is trusted | Links from other reputable sites, mentions, reviews, a consistent business profile |
Within those, specialist types exist: local SEO for businesses customers visit, e-commerce SEO for online stores, and Arabic SEO for content written for Arabic searchers. A newer branch, covered in our guide to Google AI Overviews and in generative engine optimisation, deals with being cited in AI-written answers.
What is different about SEO in Saudi Arabia?
The mechanics are the same as anywhere. The differences are in language, place and platform.
- Two languages, not one. People search in Arabic and English, and the words differ. Arabic keywords are researched separately, not translated. See Arabic SEO in Saudi Arabia.
- Maps matter. For anything customers visit, the Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. See Google Business Profile optimisation.
- Local platforms. Many Saudi stores run on platforms such as Salla or Zid, which affects what can be changed in the site's technical setup.
- Almost everyone is online. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counts 34.4 million internet users in Saudi Arabia (99.0% of the population, end of 2025), so almost every customer is reachable online. Competition for attention is the problem, not access.
What is the difference between SEO and ads?
With ads you pay each time someone clicks, and the traffic stops when the budget stops. With SEO you invest in the site and content, and the traffic continues to arrive without a per-click cost, but it takes longer to start and nobody can promise a position. Most businesses use both for different jobs. Our comparison, SEO vs Google Ads in Saudi Arabia, helps decide where the first riyal should go.
How long does SEO take to work?
It depends on the site's starting point and the competition. Google says some changes take effect within hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change had an effect. A new site in a crowded market takes longer than an established site with one clear technical fault.
Treat any provider who gives a fixed date for a first-page ranking with caution. What can be promised is the work: what will be fixed, what will be published, and how progress will be measured.
SEO terms explained

What to do next
Begin with the site you have. Check whether Google can index your key pages, whether your Arabic and English versions are linked correctly and whether your business appears on the map. Our technical SEO checklist for Saudi websites walks through each check.
